There ought to be a one step process to leap directly back into the track at the precise point where I was previously editing.

It requires two key presses:
1) "Enter" (closes the label text)
2) "Up" cursor (moves focus back to the audio track)

It could be due to different data in the id3v1 and id3v2 tags. There are many different versions of the id3 "standard". You may need to correct the displayed id3 tags in your media player.
