Hello! I'm experiencing the same thing here. It's my first time using Audacity. I have Mojave and use Audacity 2.1.1

The current version of Audacity is 2.3.3. This version has LAME included, so you don't need to install it separately: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac/

This problem is very rare on Linux, hence the lack of documentation.
Try rebooting the computer. That should fix it.
