Audacity does not currently have this feature, though it is a popular request.

Personally I don't "routinely" use any effects. I just use the effects that are appropriate for the specific thing that I'm doing.

What are you recording?
What equipment are you using?
What settings are you using in the Device Toolbar? (https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/device_toolbar.html)
Do you get an error message? If so, what does it say?
