Thanks. Yes you are correct, is should say "source track".
Unfortunately I think we have just missed the deadline for getting this correction into the next Audacity release, but I shall log it for fixing at the first opportunity.

I've seen this kind of behaviour with Skype and other voip type applications.
It won't be Audacity doing it because Audacity has no code to do that.

You could try looking in the "Activity Monitor" to see what is running (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201464)

I'm not sure what you mean be "converting music into white noise". In what way would this be different from generated white noise?

"R" (record)
"Space" (stop)
Left click on the Timeline for "Quick Play". Playback will stop at the end of the track, or you can stop playback sooner with "space".

The settings you need in the Device Toolbar are:
host: WASAPI
Recording: Speakers (USB Audio Device) (loopback)
Playback: Speakers (USB Audio Device)
