What sort of microphone are you using, and how is it attached to your computer?
Is it clipping at exactly -6 dB? (If you select the track and open the "Amplify" effect, it will tell you how much amplification is required to bring the peak level up to 0 dB)

Run the "Audio Device Info" and save the info somewhere convenient, then attach the "deviceinfo.txt" file to your reply.

- is there a quick way to convert two point labels into a region label? The easiest way is to add a new region label, then delete the surplus point labels. Move the mouse pointer in the audio track above or below the label track until it "snaps" with a yellow vertical line to the position...

Audacity does not do "real time" processing, so you can't use it for live effects.
