As a test, try changing "Buffer Length" at 50, 100, 200 milliseconds to see what difference, good or bad, that makes.

If you run a survey, please publish the results here on the forum. Two other groups have previously run similar surveys, but unfortunately didn't publish their results.

Do Noise Gate or Limiter cause the problem if you apply them manually rather than in a Macro?

Could you check if other effects that appear "below the line" in the Effect menu (such as "High Pass Filter", "Low Pass Filter", "Tremolo"...)

It looks like you have been getting away with an error in Audacity 2.3.3, but 2.4.1 is not allowing it. Please note that the one for version 2.4.1 was AFTER I followed your instructions to perform: "Transport menu > Rescan Audio Devices"

Was it the same before doing the rescan?

Which version of Audacity are you using?

Check that your computer sound system isn't applying any effects.
Audio files don't just change on their own.

Does your mixer have a control panel in the system tray, or is there an "ASIO" icon in the system tray?
(check for hidden icons)

How many hard drives / SSD has your computer got, and how much free space on each drive?

Ensure that all effects are turned off in the Windows Sound settings. See: Why do my recordings fade out or sound as if they were made in a tunnel?
