I don't have a H4N for testing, but as a workaround you could record on a flash card and then use a USB flash card reader to transfer the recording to your computer. That has the added advantage of avoiding computer fan noise.

Are you using "MME" as the "host" in the Device Toolbar?
If not, try that.

Are you plugging in the headphones, or changing anything on the US-122L after opening Audacity?

Have you tried refreshing Audacity's list of devices? ("Transport menu > Rescan Audio Devices")?

Click on the audio track at the point where you want to split, then press "Ctrl + i" (or "Edit menu > Clip boundaries > Split"). Use the Time Shift Tool to slide the audio clips apart to make space. Record the new part in a new track, then use the Time Shift Tool to line the part...
