Re: Automatic mic leveling? or Software-based commpression?
Personally, I prefer not to use compression when recording, and use compression after I've recorded "dry". If you over-do the compression, it's almost impossible to "uncompress" it accurately. I will however use "limiting" (a very fast "brick wall" compression...

Re: now here's a challenge - off-centre 45
Many old 45's had a middle bit, about 3cm diameter, that could be "popped" out.
If your record has this, pop out the middle and make a new middle out of card (with a hole in the right place).

Re: Importing from itunes
If you have mp3 (and not AAC with Digital Rights Management), you just import them into Audacity.

Re: MP3 encoding using Lame
In Audacity, mix down the audio into one track first.
Then "Export" as mp3.

Re: audacity projects sounding quiet compared to other music
As kozikowski said, more detail would make it easier to answer, but I think what you are asking for are "Compressor" and "Leveller" effects. (You may need to use "Normalise" after the compression).

Re: Effects track & routing?
Nice idea Shubi, but I think you need to be looking at DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation) rather than audio editors for that kind of thing.
On Linux, check out Ardour2
On Windows, check out "Krystal" and "Reaper".

Re: VIDEO
Try "Reaper" - it supports VST, so there's loads of plug-ins, and I think it gives you the video window that you're asking for.
It's not FreeWare, but it's very cheap, and you can try it out for as long as you like (possibly 30 days officially, but it doesn't stop working).

Re: Audacity mixer toolbar INPUT SOURCE is grayed out
I've not got a machine with RealTek sound any more, so I'm going from memory. I'm guessing that it an on-board sound card (integrated with the mobo) and it has its own mixer interface icon in the systray (either as well as, or instead of the usual Windows mixer). Check in Windows Control Panel (soun...

Re: metadata editor for 1.3.4 disturbs chain processing
How strange.... the first time I tried it, it prompted me for the first file only, then processed the rest without prompting. Tried it again and now it prompts for every file. There appears to be a setting for it in Preferences->Batch but it doesn't seem to work :( I'm not getting the crash problem ...
