If you want to be able to select the encoding options at the time that you export the file, try Audacity 1.3 beta.

There are various distortion effects in the plug-in packs. Download and install the plug-ins and try them out.

All those ideas are along the right lines - also have a play with the Eq (in the effects menu). How much compression, reverb and Eq. to use is a matter of taste - work on a copy (back up the original) and try different settings - only you can say if it sounds better or worse, so fiddle around as go ...

If, as you say, you can make a recording, then I guess that you've set it up ok. When I then make a recording end export a file in wav-format it is not possible to listen to the recording. Why ? Can you play the recording in Audacity (and hear it)? If so, then you may be doing something wrong when y...

I've occasionally noticed that kind of thing while the page is loading, but then it sorts itself out - try hitting the F5 key so that it completely reloads the page and see if that fixes it.

Those examples seem to be using a whole rack-full of effects rather than any single effect. The best thing is probably to start playing with Audacity, install and try out loads of effects and generally mess about with mashing up the sounds, cross fading, filtering, etc. and see what it can do.
