I've got XP SP2, and;

I have 1.2.6 and the mixer toolbar is greyed out.
and
I have 1.3.4 and the mixer toolbar is not greyed out.

Just to clarify, is this what you are saying? You could have a track, 10 minutes long, in Audacity, and it looks fine (all of it). You need to set the recording input in Audacity to match the audio input that you are using (the Behringer USB).
You set it in "Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O"
