Re: No Sound on Playback
Sound Card: Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device, Creative SB Live! Series (WDM) Don't select the "Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device" for input or output, only the "Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)" should be used for playback. For recording your turntable, your recording device shou...

Re: Compression
RMS - "Root Mean Square" For a technical explanation see http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Root-Mean-Square.html but in layman's terms, it's a way of taking an average values from a waveform. If you have a sine wave that goes up and down from +1 to -1 , the RMS value is about 1.4 The sense of &...

Re: saturated recordings
I've had some success using the waveshaper, click remover and compressor in audacity, but it really depends how bad the problem is. Going back to alatham's analogy of burnt cakes, it's a bit like scraping off the black bits and sticking on some fresh crumbs to take their place. :) A similar techniq...

Re: Newbie: Stops recording after a few minutes
This seems to be a recurring theme from a quick Google, what on earth is not happening! It has to be the software as if I plug it into the TV through the (ridiculously short) red/white phono leads then it plays fine continually! It's not necessarily the software, in fact it probably isn't. The outp...

Re: Audacity hangs after stopping recording
I've found a couple of other references to this problem, and it seems to be specific to x64. Unfortunately no clear solutions. The other cases that I found were mostly using RealTek audio device, and the recommendations were to update the soundcard drivers. Whether you have a RealTek audio device or...

Re: Printing FFT chart
If you open up MS Paint (or just about any other graphics application) you can use the "Print Screen" / Ctrl+V method - I agree that it's not as convenient as having a print feature in Audacity, but it's no great hardship either. I use (and recommend) Paint.NET which is an excellent free p...

Re: It worked, finally.....but
Old transistor pre-amps can be excellent - I still use my old 1970's Sony integrated amplifier (with a pure transistor phono pre-amp - no IC's in sight), but just the phono pre-amp section, connected to my (much newer) NAD amp for playing records through the hi-fi. The sound is fabulous, noticeably ...

Re: low volume voice, high volume noises
The problem with trying to do it on many files as a batch opperation is that the levels may not be the same on all the files, and you need to set the limiter as close as possible to the peak voice signal. Also you can't use Audacities "Chains" feature, as it is limited to the built in func...

Re: Recording From Vinyl
In Windows there's a volume control in the Windows Control Panel - I don't know anything about Macs, but I guess there must be something similar.
