Install ALSA if not already installed.
Go to "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O" and select "ALSA default" for playback and recording devices.
You will need a mixer application (such as alsamixergui) to select the recording source and adjust levels.

Cut the speaker cable and you will see two wires. They are probably colour coded red and black. Reconnect your speaker but cross over the wires so that red is connected to black and black connected to red. This will invert the signal, however if you are looking for a "voice cancelling" eff...

My preference is for FLAC. The amount of compression is within about 5% of the best and it is pretty quick with good hardware and software support. It is also Open Source, so no worries about license restrictions and it is cross-platform (works on Windows, Mac and Linux). I only do conversions occas...

You need to select the appropriate input from your mixer application (for example alsamixergui ). Exactly which control this is depends on your hardware, drivers and mixer, so you will probably have to fiddle around with it to find the correct settings.

The drop down menu in Audacity only works if supported by your audio driver (which it often isn't). Use your sound card mixer, or the Windows Mixer (double click on the speaker icon n the sys tray (near the clock) to select the input. There are alternative drivers available on the Blue site for high or low sensitivity (not sure if this is the case for Macs, but worth checking).
