You don't actually need these options - you can make the selection using the Windows Mixer.
(I'm not sure what has changed in Windows, but I've noticed this question come up a few times recently)

Re: Lost the Meter Toolbar
On PC's it's in "View > Toolbars" - you just need to select it to make it visible (you can't float it if it's not there).

Re: Don't see FREEVERB in the effects menu
Freeverb is not included as standard as some people had problems with it, but it is still available if you want too try it. An alternative is GVerb which is available in the LADSPA plugin packs available through the main Audacity website. GVerb has the advantage that it works directly in Audacity wi...

Re: Using USB port for recording
To record via a USB socket you will need a USB audio interface. This could be a USB microphone, a USB turntable, a USB line input or a USB mixer (depending on what you are wanting to record). Please note that many users on this forum have had problems with USB audio devices, particularly USB turntab...

Re: signal inverting
Audacity does not do real-time audio processing, but before you spend a load of time finding a way to do it I was wanting to point out that it would probably not achieve the desired noise cancelling effect. Most pro-quality mixing desks include a "phase reversal" button on each channel. Wh...

Re: No Playback
Well at least you have the audio driver sorted out now, so it's just a matter of getting the audio input selected. It may be worth having a look at "Sound Recorder" - this is a very simple Linux application for recording sound (a bit like the Windows Sound Recorder). If you can get that wo...

Re: Batch Processing for LADSPA Plug-Ins
Audacity only supports its own native effects in batch processing.

Re: Determining Record Levels
The SC4 compressor (a LADSPA plug in) is a much better compressor than the standard one, but more difficult to use. If you try the SC4, use a very fast attack, a high compression ratio, and a fairly high threshold (probably around about -6dB). Use "Effects > Amplify" after the compressor t...

Re: Background Noise
The low-tech solution: ask your lecturer if you can put your recorder on the table in front of them.
