Re: reducing harshness
You could have a look in "Analyse > Spectrum" (if available - not sure off hand if it is in Audacity 1.2.6, but if not you could install v.1.3.4). This may reveal "spikes" in the high frequencies that you could then tone down using "Effect > Equalization".

Make sure that JACK is not running - there are known issues with Audacity and JACK.

Re: Maybe it's time to go...
Is there some way to have four tracks in and out that I'm missing? If not, is there going to be? If not, is there another package that I should be looking at? Hundreds of dollars is just not possible. On Windows you could try "Reaper" (not free, but cheap and very good). On Linux you coul...

Re: Samson C01U USB Microphone (Review)
A) I generated a 10.000 Hz tone and recorded on CD. Played it into the mic. using a cd-player using only one track in audacity. After that I did a spectrum analysis. It looked exactly the same as the originally generated 10.000 Hz tone. It also sounded the same. Thus using 1 track the samson perfor...

Re: voodoo child by rogue traders and audacity
It records fine for me. Got Windows Mixer (Record settings) to record from "Stereo Mix" AND all other inputs muted (very important to have the "Mic" muted as this is frequently a source of noise, even if there is no microphone connected, and will make the recording very bad if th...

Re: ALSA : sound problem (no sound)
Does anyone know if there has been any progress with JACK/portaudio recently (or in Audacity 1.4)? It's a real pain that I have to shut down all things JACK before I can use Audacity. Also, if I have realtime support enabled, Audacity usually crashes after a few seconds, which is a shame as it makes...

Re: sound level across multiple files
Actually, I should modify my earlier (disparaging) remarks about the "Normalise" function. In Audacity 1.3 it has two rather handy features: 1) It can be used in "batch processing" (chains) 2) It can normalise multiple tracks (stacked one above the other) at the same time, and wi...

Re: File export as wav
Right Click on the Exported file and look at the Advance Properties to make sure that it actually is "Microsoft WAV 44.1kHz 16-bit PCM stereo". If that checks out OK, stuff Windows Media Player and use a CD burning program such as Nero to burn to CD. If the format is not as above, then ope...

Re: Record from speakers.
These are the relevant settings for how mine is set up for recording from my browser - in case it helps (Xubuntu 7.1 rt-kernel, Creative SBlive Value, Mozilla MPlayer Plugin ) Audacity settings: "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O": Playback Device = ALSA: front Recording Device = ALSA: SBLive...
