What command are you using to start Audacity?
Are you using a terminal window?

That looks to me like a soundcard driver problem (unless anyone knows better) If you have a PCI soundcard and on-board sound (built into the motherboard) you should disable the on-board sound in BIOS. If you only have on-board sound, look on the motherboard manufacturers website for an updated driver.
