Re: reducing the size of an MP3 file
I've reduced the size of the file to 50% - about 53MB. I'm just about to break it up into 'emailable' pieces. If you are doing that with Audacity, use the original uncompressed version. If you do it by opening the mp3 than exporting bits of it, you will be decoding and re-encoding which will reduce...

Apologies to Bill Gates, for better alternatives to WMP, see reply to your other post:

Re: *Still* experiencing import problems (mono)
CD Juicer should work - I don't know enough about it to suggest why it doesn't. I use "GRip" which does an excellent job ripping, although it seems to have a bug in Ubuntu 7.1 that makes it unable to play tracks (ripping is unaffected and works great). For playing CD's I use "Rhythmbo...

Re: vst probs (LADSPA solved)
Glad you got LADSPA working. A lot of Nyquist plug-ins should also work (though not all). Unfortunately VST support is not good - the licensing terms make it almost a waste of time for open source developers. If you really need to use VST, then I suggest that you look for a different VST host, other...

Re: Need advice on mixers
The Behringer Eurorack UB-1202 is an analogue mixer and mixes down to stereo (though you can use the "fx send" to get a third channel). If you have a reasonable quality sound card then you can plug the stereo output from the mixer into the line input of the sound card. I know someone that ...

Re: Recorded tracks play back at slower speed
You would expect digital to stay in time and run at a constant speed wouldn't you. Unfortunately this is not the case as it depends on the accuracy of the clock signal that the sound card uses. On my "SoundBlaster Live value", I get a "drift" of about 0.0000005% (if I've worked o...

Re: Recording a tone down (A-G)
I've heard of this problem with another brand of USB audio interface. It seems that there is a mismatch between the sample rate requested by Audacity and the sample rate served up by the audio device. If you have your project rate set to 44.1 kHz, then try switching it to 48 kHz. If set to 48 kHz, t...

Re: Dropping one Octave.
Unless you were converting a pure tone, transferring a music performance much over about three semi-tones in either direction usually sounds terrible. You think so? With Audacity 1.3.4 I was surprised at how good the quality was. Sure, a voice, percussive or unpitched sounds such as cymbals transpo...

Re: Metadata and Uncompressed File Formats?
Yes, annoying isn't it.
There is an option to switch it off, but only for batch (chain) processing,
"Edit > Preferences > Batch"
Even then, it often does not work and the meta data box still pops up.

Re: *Still* experiencing import problems (mono)
Convert the wav files to standard "Microsoft PCM WAV" format. Some programs will produce files similar, but non-standard formats (or malformed header information) and these can confuse Audacity. The Audacity team are working to improve support for more file types, but at present the suppor...
