If you are using a conventional sound card (not USB) then you need to use the WINDOWS MIXER (speaker icon near the clock) to enable (not muted) the playback of your recording source.

1) Make sure that you use "Export", and not "Export Selection" - the latter will only export the audio that is currently selected.
2) Re. the recording problem - would you by any chance be recording from a USB turntable?

How about 70 mp3's and a playlist? Then the listener could just scroll through the playlist to find the chapter that they want?

Make sure that you have plenty of free disk space, and defragment your hard drive.
Disable any screen saver.
