Re: effects - normalize vs amplify
Normalize can be set to any value you like up to 0dB (Audacity 1.3.x) If you record "silence", Audacity should give a flat line exactly in the middle of the track (marked zero on the vertical scale, which i the same as "minus infinity decibels"). Due to imperfections in sound car...

If you are using a laptop, run it from the batteries - laptop power supplies can often cause interference.

Re: lost most of the file during EXPORT AS WAV
1.4 GB is not "plenty of space" if you are doing an hour long recording. it is barely enough. Think of an audio CD - around 1 hour of music in around 700 MB (0.7 GB) If you do any edits on your recording (for example if you "Normalize"), then Audacity needs to make a second copy ...

Re: monitoring while recording.
There's a huge range of USB audio devices including USB sound cards, USB Turntables (we see lots of problems with these), and USB microphones. Prices range from abut $30 US up to several hundred $'s.

Re: Effect amplify - denegrate sound at some amt?
For the very best sound quality, set your default project rate to 32 bit - this allows a huge amount of volume scaling with completely negligible errors (those extra 8 bits prevent "rounding off" discrepancies). If you require your final show to be 24 bit or 16 bit, there will be a tiny (v...

Congratulations Granddaddy Cor.
If you have time, it may be useful to other users if you could post a "How to un-inastall Sound Card Drivers in Vista".
BTW, I enjoyed your slide shows (though I've not seen all 68 of them) - very nicely done.

Re: Monitoring while recording? How?
It is unfortunately not uncommon for features to be disabled in the sound card driver in Laptop computers. This seems to be particularly true with Dell computers, and those using Sigmatel or Realtek on-board sound. If fully functional drivers are not available, then there is little that you can do a...
