Re: acoustic guitar sounds like an electric when recorded
Can you upload a short sample to the internet and post a link. Only a couple of seconds are required, but if possible upload it as a wav file.

Re: Audacity crashes when I convert a file to mono
How big are these files?
How much free hard drive space do you have?
At exactly what point does it crash?

Re: acoustic guitar sounds like an electric when recorded
Check the signal levels - all the way from the guitar to the computer, and from the computer to the speakers. It sounds like you have a level set too high somewhere which is causing distortion.

Re: problems importing music?!?!
Make sure that you are importing a supported format.

Audacity can not "import directly from CD". You must either Record, or Rip a CD.

Re: wma vs mp3 and editor
Import them, and then drag them into position with the time shift tool. When you Export from Audacity they will be mixed into a single stereo track. Make sure that you have plenty of free disk space.
Is there a reason why you need to physically join these files rather than using a play list?

Re: Spoken Word: Tweaking for Maximum Quality
Do you know what the major differences are between 1.3.4 and 1.3.5? What will I be missing, in other words? For the English, Windows version - not much. The main difference that you may notice is that if you need to set up latency correction (for multi-track recording), in 1.3.4 it has to be set up...

<<<"Import > Raw Data" >>> That's very different from... Open > music.wmv Sure, no problem! Don't you get this: error.png But perhaps it would be better if the "Import" and "Open" dialogues defaulted to "All supported formats" rather than "All Files"...

Re: Playback meters active but no sound; OpenSuSE 11.
That's looking a lot better than you had at first. The first picture is only showing some of the playback options. You see the faint chevrons on the right of the screen, they indicate that there are more settings if you scroll across. I would have expected to see as slider for the "master"...

Re: wma vs mp3 and editor
It shouldn't crash, but rather than going through the (often long) procedure of trying to fix it, I suggest that you try upgrading Audacity to 1.3 (beta).
