Can you upload the first few seconds or so somewhere on the internet and post a link so that we can have a go with it. If you don't have any web space, try a file hosting site like mp3space.com Upload it as a 16 bit 44.1 kHz wav file so that we have a good quality sample to work with, and chop it do...

There have been some posts that suggest that 32 bit Operating systems can run up against a 4 GB limit similar to the limit for WAV files (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAV ). I've noticed that this issue can sometimes be created by rapidly clicking (more than 2 clicks) on the launch icon, resulting in 2 or more instances of Audacity trying to open simultaneously, and creating a kind of logjam, where the program appears on the task bar, but can not be opened or maximised....

Use Audacity 1.3.x (beta) - there are a number of tool that may help, including "Change Tempo" and "Change Speed" effects, the "Transcription Toolbar", and "Tempo Track".

Check the Windows Mixer (loudspeaker icon near the clock) and make sure that you've not got something muted.
