Do you know what sound card is in your computer?
Is it an ordinary PC microphone that you are using, or a "headset" microphone/headphones?
Does the microphone plug into your soundcard with a mini-jack connector or is it USB?

Re: Error while opening sound device. Please check the input
Hi texas.chef94
I'm pretty new to Linux myself, but I'll help if I can.
What version of Audacity are you using, what flavour of Linux, and what sound card do you have?
Are you getting any error messages?
I guess that what you really want to do is to record from your Sampson USB microphone?

Re: Does't recognize block (.au) files
I can't open any of the .au files manually. I've tried importing them into Audacity both as Audio and Raw Data, but they all just play back a loud click and approx 25 sec of silence In that case I think your efforts are likely to be in vain. Audacity should be able to open the .AU files with "...

I think the "Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer card" should work with the current version of ALSA on Ubuntu, but it will probably be reported as "Sound Blaster Audigy LS".

Re: Paste and merge ?
If the sounds overlap, then you need to have them on separate tracks so that they can be mixed (note that mixing is done automatically on Export). This method is extremely versatile as it means that you can move, change the pan, or the volume level of any clip at any time. If the clips do not overla...

Re: Splicing into an existing track
You have not said what format your old recording is, but you will need it in a format that is supported by Audacity, such as WAV. I recommend using Audacity 1.3.x rather than 1.2.6 With Audacity 1.3.5 Import the old file into Audacity and find the bits that you want to change - Select each bit and p...

Re: Trial voice when recording
There is no trial version of Audacity.
Audacity is open source software.
Perhaps you have some other trial software installed that is causing the problem.

Re: Volume issues
Make sure that you have the correct (USB) recording input selected in "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O"
Also if you are using Audacity 1.2.x, try upgrading to 1.3.5 (USB microphones did not exist when Audacity 1.2.6 was written).

Re: Installation internal error, failed on _shfoldr.dll
Try Audacity 1.3.x from the main Audacity website: http://audacityteam.org/download/windows
(Audacity 1.2 is very old now, and 1.3 has many enhanced features)

Re: edit a wmv sound
Audacity does not support WMV files. The WMA format is protected by Microsoft patents, which means that regardless of the libraries used, there are restrictions on what you can do with the format. That's the whole point of software patents, and for WMV (video) files, they have already been enforced ...
