I have the same problem when recording. I have to start recording then press pause while I make the connections, as the input connections are not visible until Audacity is in record mode.

You need to be very careful editing .aup files manually - it's very easy to completely mess them up. However, the project doesn't work now, so what is there to loose? It's quite safe to have a look in the aup file, just open it in a text editor. Do you have a text editor that can display line numbers?

Use Audacity 1.3.5 and select "change tempo" from the effects menu.
Note that the more you stretch it, the worse the sound quality will become.
