To me though, using CTRL + SHIFT + *right* (and vice-versa) to contract the *left* edge seems unintuitive, even though it's a right-moving direction. I still do it the other way round by mistake now. With chain conversions, Audacity 1.3.6 automatically selects an MP3 format that is appropriate for the sample rate of your project. Turn off "Software play through".

How about loading them into a sampler, then writing a script to convert the "logical templates" into midi notes. You can then play the midi notes in a sequencer and the sampler will output the corresponding audio files (which can be recorded into Audacity if you wish).

Hmm... not quite sure why you would want to spend money on that when you can do it in Audacity for free. Oh well, each to his/her own.
