What sound card are you using?
Can you record successfully in Windows Sound Recorder? (WSR is a standard part of a Windows installation - it only records 60 seconds, but it is a useful tool in trouble shooting).

Re: increasing gain: hardware or software?
I've been using the 'amplify' effect to get the signal to the -3dB level that I can archive / play / burn / etc. Some records are so 'silent', that they need an additional gain of 17-18 dB. So your signal level is around -20dB. I would say that this is a little below the optimum, but not much. If y...

Re: headphones
The setting that needs to be enabled is "play other tracks while recording new one". "software playthrough" should be disabled (not selected) as this will cause you to hear an out of time echo of your voice which is very difficult to work with. It may not be possible for you to h...

Re: Error Message help needed
It is not recommended to use an external drive for recording on as they are susceptible to the kind of problems that you are having. Switching the location of the temporary folder back to an internal drive will probably solve the problem. As waxcylinder suggested, it is perfectly OK to use your exte...

Re: Audacity keeps crashing!
I use Audacity 1.3.5, so details may be slightly different, but the principals are the same. Everytime I copy and paste an existing track to a new track, .... Im doing that so that I can tinker with effects without risking losing the original track. if I want to ensure that I do not mess up a record...

Re: Changing pitch causes track to not line up
I would like to know if you or others have had a problem such as this with the pitch change I've only really used it on very short sections - for example, just correcting the pitch on a couple of slightly out of tune notes, and then I've used the method that I described earlier, and no problem. I'v...

Re: Changing pitch causes track to not line up
lets say the first chorus I change the pitch of a couple notes, that section lines up but later in the song (let's say the interlude) for some reason it's off enough to noticably hear that the lead and backup vocals don't start and stop at the same time. I can't see how you are getting that to happ...

Re: Trying to Record Drums, not sounding too good, any ideas
Drum kits are very loud - close mic'ing drums requires microphones that can handle the very high sound levels. Recording at a distance will pick up lots of sound that is bouncing around the room. It is important to cut down the echoes and reverberation in the room a lot. Get lots of soft furnishings...

Re: Utterly Baffled by Volume Issues
Try using the effect on a couple of short sections and use the "Undo" (Ctrl+Z) to undo the effect. When you have found settings that seem right, apply the effect to the whole track (you can still use "Undo" if it's not quite right).
