Go to "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O" and look at the recording and playback devices. If they are set to OSS then try out the ALSA drivers. If there are no options for ALSA you will need to install it from the repository. If you have an option for "ALSA (default)", then that is ...

I think this is an issue entirely concerning the hardware and driver. Audacity just records the data that is sent to it and has no control whatsoever over how your sound card handles the audio data.
