Re: recording vocals over music
Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O tab Select "play other tracks while recording new one". That's the setting in Audacity - once you have that set correctly it's a matter of setting the sound card levels in the sound card control panel / Windows mixer. (look for a loudspeaker icon near th...

Re: Audacity Crashed - recovered manually
It's still quite possible to make Audacity 1.3 crash. While there are new features being tried out there are bound to be new bugs created along the way, but once you are aware of them they are usually quite easy to avoid and most will get fixed before the 1.4 release. But yes, crash recovery is much...

Re: Shifting Multiple Tracks Together
I've only got Audacity 1.3.6 on my computer at the moment, but I was pretty sure that you could do this with Audacity 1.2.x as well - maybe not (can anyone confirm if this is available in Audacity 1.2.x or not?).
Why not try Audacity 1.3.6?

Re: Fixing variable sound level (DJ Mix)
is 800Hz the recommended frequency for splitting the two bands? Is there a benefit to doing 3 or 4 bands as opposed to 2? If so what frequencys do you suggest splitting at? It all depends on the music. It's best to try and keep the crossover frequencies out of the most critical frequency bands othe...

Re: Shifting Multiple Tracks Together
If the tracks are next to each other, click and drag across the tracks to select all the tracks that you want to move. If the tracks are not together (for example track 1 and track 3) then you can either rearrange the tracks (click below the track name and drag up/down) or you can select an area of ...

Re: Audacity & the Blue Screen of Death
My sound card is a SoundBlaster Live Value! Well I can assure you that your sound card should work well with Audacity - that's what I use. I'm on Linux now, but used it successfully on XP for a long time (still do occasionally). If you're technically inclined, here are some third party drivers avai...

Re: Amplify or normalize
Great thought-piece here Steve - great to have this documented here. Are you planning to add this article to the Wiki and/or the 1.4 manual? Thanks, and yes, I've just finished adding it in the "For Users" category of the wiki: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Amplify_and_Norm...

Could we also have a look at the first few (say 10) lines of the .aup file that is giving this error?

Re: How to record live music and speaking?
Modern PC laptops invariably have poor quality sound cards built in, so if sound quality is important to you, then you will need to buy an external audio device. (I presume that you are using Windows). I have an inexpensive Behringer UCA202 external USB device that works well with Audacity and the s...
