Re: big lo-fi audio files for wide audience: what codec?
Pretty much as orgelquaeler said. MP3 is probably the best choice for a broad and diverse audience as it is widely supported. "Speex" would give you much better compression, but is not widely known about (perhaps you could offer the downloads in both formats?) I would go for VBR rather tha...

Re: Recording at 24bit appears to be 16 bits padded to 24bit
I upgraded to the latest BEtA version od Audacity, and now I can't even select the Emu as a recording device. Ugh! Additionally, it makes me have the playback device the same as the recording device. What options do you have for the recording and playback devices? This is with Audacity 1.3.7 on Win...

Re: Auto metadata title in 1.3?
The file names can be numbered by selecting that option in the Export Multiple dialogue. The track title are as set in the meta-data according to the label name (in the "Tile" field) The track numbers in the meta-data are sequential (in the "Track Number" field) The track number ...

Re: can't export multiple wav
You have a label track with labels in it?
You followed these instructions? http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... ate_tracks
(note that labels will look different from those pictures - they are from Audacity 1.2)

Re: Is this possible?
You probably need to right click on the link and "Save As"
What you see is the plug-in. It is just a text file with a ".ny" extension.
When you have downloaded it you need to find your Audacity plug-ins folder and put it in there, then restart Audacity.

Re: HELP! recording from tapes to computer/cd
You seem to be "almost there".
Things to check will depend on your exact set-up:
Windows XP / Vista / Mac
Audacity version?
What sound card?
What wires you have connected?
Anything else that may help to present a clear picture of your set-up?

Re: Audacity 32/24 bits and hardware 24
The bit depth of the recording depends on the hardware, drivers and the bit depth set in Audacity. If the hardware and drivers support 24 bit and Audacity is set to 24 bit or 32 bit (float) then the data will be 24 bit data. Having Audacity set to 32 bit allows processing to be done at the highest p...

Re: Audacity crashes in vista
I don't have the laptop in front of me, but I'm pretty sure I already have the latest stable version of Audacity loaded. I will check when I get home from work. No, not the "stable" version - the "beta" version. In spite of the name, the beta version is pretty stable, and on Vis...

Re: Is this possible?
1) Make a copy of the file so that you are not working on the original (in case you completely mess up). 2) Upgrade to the latest version of Audacity 1.3 3) If there is background rumbling or other low frequency noise, use the high-pass filter set at about 100Hz 4) If there is noticeable hiss, use t...

Re: Import MP3, Export MP3, smaller file?
MP3 format always reduces the quality because it is a "lossy" form of compression. The only way to avoid it is to use uncompressed formats (WAV) or lossless compression (FLAC). Both of these formats will be MUCH bigger file size than MP3. loss through MP3 compression is cumulative. Audacit...
