Did you export the track as a 16 bit 44100Hz WAV file (as described in the tutorials - see link at top of page)

I wouldn't say the microphone was particularly good for recording, but it depends on what you are recording - perhaps ok for rapping, but likely to sound a bit muffled compared to other microphones for speech. I believe that Behringer do a Podcast kit that includes a large diaphragm studio condenser...

When you say that the left/right levels never match, how far out are they? How close can you get them? Is it always the same channel that is louder than the other? (which one?) Audacity 1.3 is pretty stable now - I've not used 1.2 for a long time.
Audacity 1.2 is virtually obsolete and will be replaced by 1.4 (stable) in the near future. Audacity 1.4 will be based on Audacity 1.3.
