I'm just old and cranky. No problem, you're in good company ;) Numero two-o: I installed 1.3.7 and exporting a wav file works as expected, that is it accepts exactly what I typed in to replace the default file name. So, problem solved. And Audacity 1.2 will be "retired" when 1.4 comes out...

An external USB sound card would fix it, and probably give you better sound quality as well. If you decide to go down this route, you will need to ensure that the USB device has suitable inputs for your purposes. When you make the recording you should see a red recording meter flickering up and down with the sound. Ideally you want the level to go reasonably high, but never all the way to 0dB (max). In Audacity 1.3 (not sure about Audacity 1.2 as I've not used it in ages) you can grab the recording/playback ...

If the original recording was slightly "clipped" (recorded at too high a level causing distortion), then after compressing to MP3 the distortion is likely to sound a lot worse.

We are running out of options here.
The next step is to try updating/down-dating the sound card drivers and see if you get the required options.
Failing that, the remaining option is a new sound card. Fortunately, external USB sound cards can be quite cheap.

A hot key for "Recall last effect" would help a great deal when using Noise Reduction.

("Recall Last Effect" = bring up dialogue screen/GUI for the last used effect)
