Re: Recording Bit Depth and Gain
MP3s will be worse quality than 16 bit WAV. 16 bit 44.1 kHz is CD quality, so unless you started with an extremely good quality recording, then down'sampling from 32 bit to 16 bit should not produce any noticeable change in sound quality. Try it and see if you or your friends can tell the difference...

Re: Wave Out Mix?
If you have a desktop computer with Line-in and Line-out connectors, then you can use a lead to connect the line out to the line-in, thus routing the sounds playing on your computer back into the line-in socket through which they can be recorded. This does not usually work on lap-top computers other...

Re: WAV files exported from Audacity are not bit-identical
By default, Audacity works with 32 bit audio. If you import a 16 bit WAV into a 32 bit project and export it back as a 16 bit file, then the down-sampling from 32 bit to 16 bit audio will produce (probably inaudible) differences in bit values. If you are simply cutting, deleting and pasting, then it...

Re: Programmatic access to the Audacity API
Simple processes like this can be done in batches using the "Chains" commands (Audacity 1.3) Not all functions in Audacity are supported, but Normalize and Export are supported. If you try to process too many files in one go, you will probably run out of disk space as temporary files are n...

Re: MFCC audacity
Audacity 1.3 provides Cepstrum analysis, though I do not know what sort of cepstrum it is.
"Analysis > Plot Spectrum" then select the required algorithm.

Re: Steps from dry recording to finished mix?
The first thing is that you need something decent to listen to your recordings through - either some good headphones, or some decent speakers (or both) - Generally PC speakers are not suitable as they are hopelessly inaccurate and will give a completely false sense of the tonal balance. If you do no...

Re: MP3 Export Crash
Someone is probably bound to ask why this is in the "Audacity 1.2.x stable" part of the forum... never mind, I'll move it quick and maybe no-one will notice ;) There have been 2 versions of Audacity 1.3.7 - unless you have downloaded it very recently (within the last couple of weeks, you s...

Re: Realtek HD and recording through Line-In - How?
But it has 3 jacks. A headphone jack, a speaker jack and a Line-In jack. Therefore the dropdown menu should light up, asking me which jack I would like to choose as my recording device, though this never happens. Is this a desktop or a laptop computer? If it is a desktop, make sure that nothing is ...
