With USB devices, the device does not exist until it is plugged in. Audacity identifies available devices when it is first opened, so you can only select a USB device if it has already been connected. A possible workaround would be to set Audacity to use the Windows Sound Mapper, then plug in the US...

What do you mean pretty poor sound quality? .... Was the WAV version any better? The WAV version is noticeably better sound quality than the MP3 version.
