Re: PLEASE HELP! im just started using audacity yesterday...

Re: can't find cause of intermittant noise on playback
Lots of problems with internal PC laptop sound cards - basically they are usually poor quality, and crammed into a small space on the circuit board making them prone to picking up interference from other components such as the hard drive and fan.

The USB device must be connected and recognised by your OS before you open Audacity.
Then check in "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O" that the USB device is selected as the recording device (if you have to make a change here you may need to restart Audacity again).

Re: Problems finding EXACT version 1.26 of Audacity for Ubun
You can get it here: http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=6235&filename=audacity-src-1.2.6.tar.gz&a=12994558 but you will need to build it yourself (this is the 1.2.6 sourcecode). PLEASE DO NOT tell me that 1.3x is better for Ubuntu because Canonical said so and thus I sho...

Re: Background noise and hissing
Check in the sound cards control panel that you have the microphone selected as the recording input and not "stereo in". Note that most general purpose sound cards have rubbish quality microphone inputs - that's why many users either use a microphone pre-amp and plug that into the line inp...
