I don't think you can do that in a convincing way with effects - computers can't "act" and you need "acting".

Do you have a lot of plug-ins installed?
Plug-ins can slow down the launch time a lot, especially if there are plug-ins (or other shared object files in the plug-ins path) that are not supported by Audacity.

With 24-bit recording you can probably allow a lot more than 6 dB headroom, if you want to, with no audible loss of sound quality, though it does depend on the quality of the equipment. Somewhat oversimplifying, but as a general idea: The theoretical maximum dynamic range for 24-bit audio is 144 dB....

The appearance and behaviour of the scroll bar is provided by the underlying operating system, not by Audacity itself.
