It sounds like you are doing it right. Are you using "Export" to output your audio file?
This may be a limitation in Audacity 1.2. Can you upgrade to 1.3? (don't worry about the warnings about it being beta software. These days it is more stable than the 1.2.6 version).

What are you intending to do with these high/low frequencies? Do you need to "play" them? If so, what other equipment do you have? If not, what do you want to do with them?
