Which version of Audacity are you using? Audacity 1.2 is really old - can you upgrade to the current version (1.3.9) ?

You know, I've been using Audacity all this time and I never noticed that you could silence a section with the w|-|w thing :D Well I've tried all those things and I can't reproduce the problem, but I think I'm using a much more recent version of Audacity. I'm using Audacity 1.3.9 Try upgrading to 1....

Upgrade to Audacity 1.3.9 and see if that fixes the problem.

I've come round to your idea jtp_60 My latest code uses an envelope follower to control the cut-off frequency of a high pass filter. "Banshee" may be able to do the job.
It is available through your package manager.
I've not tried it, but I've heard that it is an excellent replacement for iTunes on Linux.
