Re: How to amplify without clipping

Use a dynamic compressor effect.
Don't use the compressor effect that is in Audacity 1.2.6
You can try the compressor that is in the latest 1.3 version, or the SC4 compressor by Steve Harris (I think it's available in the plug-ins pack from the main Audacity web site).

Re: HELP getting started

Make sure that you have installed the WDM drivers for the mbox2.
Reboot your computer and do not open Protools. Open Audacity and check the settings in "Edit > Preferences > Devices"

Re: freezes

Check the settings in Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O
Check in the Creative Mixer that you have an input enabled for recording.

The Amplify effect in both Audacity 1.2 and 1.3 will prevent you from accidentally amplifying audio ...

Re: Stage recording advice...

I use an Asus EEE PC 901, Edirol UA-25EX USB soundbox, Octava MK-012 microphones (matched pair with omni-directional, cardioid & hyper cardioid capsules), good quality cables, fairly nice microphone stand with adjustable microphone holders. And of course Audacity :-) I don't know about the EEEP...
