Until Audacity 2.0 is released you need to use the latest beta version.
You may also need to use it in XP compatibility mode.

Just so I can hear what is being recorded as I record it. On Linux with PulseAudio you should be able to configure Pulse to output the sound without using Software Playthrough. Is the microphone listed in both the input and output sections of the sound card mixer?
