Your USB may be intermittently loosing its connection. USB is dependent on the availability of your processor so avoid stressing the processor by asking too much from it. Avoid running other programs at the same time as Audacity and shut down any non-essential processes.

Most audio hardware on Windows (and Linux) support hardware playthrough. To enable it you must use the sound cards interface (Mixer or Control Panel) - it is not accessible through Audacity. Check your turntable and see if it has a volume control. Some of them have a volume control on the bottom (under the turntable).
