The actual recordings take place over several days, but the length is only about ten minutes. You mean that you are trying to make a recording that is several days long but the sound activated periods are very short? Exactly which version of Audacity are you using? Does it work over shorter periods...

Audacity 1.2 projects can be opened in Audacity 1.3 providing that all the data that the project uses is still available.
