Tested with Audacity 1.3.11 on Win XP and Linux and get a "clipping" indicator wherever the waveform reaches 0dB. Have noticed this with other versions of Audacity previously. AFAIK Audacity should display a red line when the waveform reached 0dB. As Bill says, with anything other than 32b...

No it's not Audacity, it's Vista. Look in the Windows Control Panel, there should be a setting for recording in mono or stereo. I trust you are using a Line input and not a Mic input? Try removing the VST bridge and see if Audacity will open correctly.

The default Amplify will increase the size of the waves until one of them somewhere in the show hits maximum. You can tell amplify to ignore clipping and increase the size a little more.
