Unfortunately I think you are looking at starting again.
We strongly recommend that immediately after making an important recording you Export a backup copy as a WAV file.

Could you select about 1 second of this noise and use "Export Selection as WAV", then upload the exported file as an attachment to your post.

Some Vista/Win 7 machines do not support recording from "Stereo Mix".

Audacity does not support real time processing, and it does not use the Steinberg VST SDK (due to license restrictions), so you only get partial VST support.

Not exactly "less effective", but the level at which the compression kicks in is set by the "threshold" level, so for a lower level signal the threshold would need to be set lower. If you're track is 32 bit (recommended) then there there's no harm in normalizing more than once. N...

Both of these are firmly at the "budget" end of the scale, but the iMic can be switched to stereo line in and should be able to do the job.

Look for a loudspeaker icon near the time/date on your desktop. Open it and look for the recording options. Set the recording input to "Stereo Mix".
