When Audacity 1.2.6 was written, Quad core was science fiction. Have a go with the latest 1.3.x version of Audacity and see if that behaves better.

Audacity 1.3.x is generally less prone to crashing, and much better at automatically recovering data after a crash than Audacity 1.2.x, but if if it does crash, and is unable ...

Are you using USB speakers by any chance?

You need to set your recording source to the input that you are using (mic/line) and not "stereo mix".
