Firstly you should update to Audacity 1.3.11 - not because of this issue but because there is a bug in 1.3.10 which will cause problems later on. So that we're clear, Audacity was working fine recording from your desktop microphone until today/yesterday?
Do you run other audio applications? In particular, do you run any voip programs such as Skype?

Audacity does not currently support multi-channel playback, though you can export multichannel files for playback in other applications.
Does that blow out using Audacity for doing this project or is it worth us discussing the multichannel record issues?

What you appear to have there is the standard set of effects that are distributed with Audacity. Other effects may be installed separately. If you think that you have other effects (for example LADSPA effects) installed but they are not showing up, check in "Edit menu > Preferences > Effects&qu...
