To record sounds playing on your computer you should ideally set the default recording input to Stereo Mix by going to the Windows Control Panel and setting it there.

For one of your backup copies you could use FLAC, or compress the WAVs with ZIP. Either of these options will allow you to get close to twice as much music per CD but they will not play in a standard audio CD player.
