The best way would be to use two computers.

Alternatively, if you have a computer that is high enough spec. you could set up a "virtual machine" (such as VirtualBox) and do the editing on the virtual machine while recording on the real machine.

How big are your Audacity projects?

I am pretty sure that automation is best done using a script for the targeted operating system and a scripting language which would do much smarter/powerful job. It's already possible to do this by scripting with Python (or any other language that supports named pipes): https://manual.audacityteam....

One of the developers is looking into it and has identified the cause - He's now looking for the best way to fix it.

Does your computer have the file:
System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/MobileDevice

Try updating to Audacity 2.4.2 https://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac/

Try "Transport menu > Rescan Audio Devices".

Unfortunately that file is totally corrupt.
If you've not done so already, I'd recommend updating to the latest version of Audacity (2.4.2): https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/
