Re: mic preamp with digital output?

USB has a nasty habit of falling over when either the CPU gets busy or there's too much data. For these reasons Firewire is generally used on multi-channel sound cards. For mono/stereo sound cards the performance of USB is usually adequate (unless they've used a really poor quality USB chip) and USB...

Re: Why are some tracks shown as mono when they are not?

FWIW, I've seen that happen in Audacity 1.2 - I've no idea why, but I've not had it happen in 1.3.11

Re: budget (usb) mic for classical guitar recording needed

Not all of the capacitors are "critical" though it's unlikely to do harm to user over-specified parts (other than harm to the wallet). Capacitors in-line with the signal path (for de-coupling DC) are probably the most critical. Hopefully the microphone itself will have a reasonable degree ...

Re: Big Difference in Audio Quality (Microphone)

Rappers often prefer "dynamic microphones" to "condenser microphones". With a dynamic microphone you can get right onto the mic (like rappers do on stage) whereas condenser types are usually used several inches away from the mouth. The "Shure SM58" is one of the most po...

Re: Sound doesn't work?

I have downloaded 1.3.9 Audacity version. This part of the forum is for Audacity 1.2 I have also downloaded Lame. Lame is not required for recording, it is only required after you have recorded for exporting the recording as an MP3 file. Audacity does not require lame for recording, or for exportin...

Re: high pitched background noise

Skype can cause recording problems, but not this sort of problem. I also very much doubt that it is caused by AGC or any other setting. The signal that is being recorded strongly suggests faulty hardware. If you're using a USB microphone, try it on a different computer and if you get the same proble...

Re: SSM2019 monolithic pre-amp chip

Imagine you have a microphone that has a dynamic range of 145dB and a full scale signal of 1 volt. In such a situation a noise level of 0.0001v is pretty small. Now imagine that we have a microphone that has the same 145dB dynamic range, but a full scale signal if 0.1 volts. If the microphone pre-am...

That button is the "PAUSE" button. The "STOP" button has the brown square.
Effects and other menu items are not available while playback is paused - that's not a bug it's intentional.

Re: Recording streaming audio

I was really hoping that the information would dig up something decisive, but it doesn't. That all looks fine, so now we're left with going after the long-shots. I'm not sure what you've tried or what your level of computer experience is, so I'll cover a few issues and you can shout if there's anyth...

Re: Could not open MP3 encoding library

VBR encoding is not available in Audacity 1.2 - it requires Audacity 1.3 VBR (Variable Bit Rate) has the advantage that it can use more "bits" where the complexity of the sound requires it, and less bits for less complex audio. This will usually produce a better quality:size trade-off than...
