In the Device Toolbar select "Jack Audio System" as the "host" and "System" for both recording and playback devices. Audacity will then record to and play from the Jack audio stream.

Check in the Windows Sound control panel and ensure that your realtek device is set for a sample rate of 44100 in both the Recording tab and the Playback tab.

That was two years ago.
If I were doing it again now, I'd probably use Audacity's Limiter. I might also try throwing a bit of "Distortion" effect into the mix.
