Audiobook publishers are often very fussy about the amount of background noise (or as they tend to refer to it: "room tone").

The "mod-script-pipe" module must be enabled - it is disabled by default.
IMPORTANT: After enabling mod-script-pipe, restart Audacity.

BGravato had an ART pre-amp. I don't recall if it was the USB version or not.

Ensure that you have set the Windows "microphone permissions" to allow Audacity access (Windows calls all audio input devices "microphone" in this context).
