Re: Constant, loud static noise.

I can't quite make sense of this bit: First problem I encountered was severe latency. The recordings sounded okay, but I couldn't live with that latency. If you are just recording from the mixer - how are you hearing any latency? Are you trying to listen to the sound as it is recorded into Audacity ...

Re: Help needed with automation and tone generation

The "Generate" functions are not currently supported by Chain commands. To create a stereo track with a different tone in each channel: First create your two tones as mono tracks. Place the tone that you want to be the Left channel above the tone that you want as the Right channel. Click o...

Re: I need savvy suggestions about music slowdown

An alternative method is to use the "Change Speed" effect in Audacity 1.3.12 (it's in the effects menu). BTW this high-frequency-loss problem is not curable with expensive software, the cure is a tape player which plays at the correct speed. The frequency response of tape that is recorded ...

Re: Multitrack recording - direct to Audacity or external de

don't you still need driver support from audio interface vendors to be able to plug it into your system? Fortunately ALSA supports a huge range of sound cards - most will work out of the box, though some may require a bit of tweaking. Jack is usually configured to use ALSA as the sound card driver ...

Re: Monitored Distortion

The cassette deck has a gain control I presume that you mean the knob on the back of the machine. The one on the front is for when you are recording onto cassette - the one on the back is for recording onto the computer. I presume that you have tried adjusting that all the way round in both directi...

Re: Record seperate tracks

I think I've worked it out. I mucked around with the windows audio settings so that CD volume, MIC volume and Stereo Mix were muted, and only LINE Volume unmuted. Then I selected "Play other tracks while recording" in Audacity. And now I have seperate tracks. That is exactly correct. Cong...

Re: Sound distortion in recording

DI boxes usually have 3 pin XLR connectors for the output that cannot be easily be adapted to suit the mini-jack input of a laptop computer. Whomper is correct that one possibility is that you could be overloading a microphone input on your laptop. The audio input on laptop computers are frequently ...

Re: change in balance from stereo to mono

I always thought that when changing a song from stereo to mono, the two sides just overlapped and became one, thus the balance of the instruments would not change. Usually that is correct, but there can be complications (as you've just discovered). Here's a little experiment that will demonstrate t...
