You should be using Audacity 1.3.12 with Vista. Audacity 1.2.6 is too old to run well on Vista.

I'd like to make them mono, but when I do the simple method, the audio gets a little muffled. How are you doing that, with "Stereo Tracks to Mono" from the "Tracks" menu? Another way would be to click on the track name, then select "Split to Mono". This will split the ...

Immediately before you export, look in the bottom left corner of Audacity. There is a box that says "Project Rate (Hz)". Make sure that it is set to 44100. If it is not on 44100, change it to 44100, then export as "16 bit Microsoft PCM WAV". If you still get the same problem then...
